Hugo Osterhaus graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1870. He retired as a Rear Admiral on June 15, 1913, but returned to duty during World War I and earned the Navy Cross. During that war his son, Hugo Wilson Osterhaus serving as a Captain, also earned the Navy Cross. It was a rare instance of father and son each earning the Navy Cross in the same war.
