The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Gunner’s Mate E. E. Nordquist, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in Command of the Armed Guard on the S.S. CHINCHA. For prompt action in returning the fire of an enemy submarine which opened fire at a range of 6,000 yards and fired 30 shots at Chincha. The Chincha fired eight shots and caused the submarine to submerge.
