The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Machinist’s Mate W. D. McLea, United States Navy, for heroic action in entering compartment full of steam after two unsuccessful attempts. Chief Machinist’s Mate McLea acted on his own initiative, used excellent judgment and displayed evidence of self-forgetfulness and indifference to danger.
