By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Hospital Apprentice First Class Hal Eugene Martin (ASN: 303799), United States Navy, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Hospital Apprentice First Class Martin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the First Battalion, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. At Blanc Mont, France, on 5 October 1918, he rushed into a barrage and rescued a wounded man who had been dropped there when the stretcher bearers were wounded. During the entire action from 3 to 10 October, this soldier (blue jacket) was at all times ready to dash out and care for the wounded. After the operations it was necessary to evacuate him with a high fever. His untiring efforts and personal bravery saved many lives and was an inspiration to the men.
