The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Hospital Apprentice First Class Hal Eugene Martin, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service while serving as a Corpsman attached to the First Battalion, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Mont Blanc, on 5 October 1918. Hospital Apprentice First Class Martin rushed into a barrage and rescued a wounded man who had been dropped there when the stretcher bearers were wounded. During the entire action from October 3 to 10, Hospital Apprentice First Class Martin was at all times ready to dash out and care for the wounded. After the operations it was necessary to evacuate him with a high fever. His untiring efforts and personal bravery saved many lives and was an inspiration to the men.

Hospital Apprentice First Class Martin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the First Battalion, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. At Blanc Mont, France, on 5 October 1918, he rushed into a barrage and rescued a wounded man who had been dropped there when the stretcher bearers were wounded.
