The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Clarence Frederick Leary, United States Navy (Reserve Force), for extraordinary heroism on the occasion of a fire on the U.S.S. Charlton Hall on 20 July 1918, in entering the burning hold at the risk of his life in an attempt to save the ship.
