Hospital Apprentice First Class Kinkle displayed untiring energy and rare judgment and bravery in attending to wounded men on the advance of the line during the action near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France. He worked continually for two days and nights, without food or rest, refusing to leave the line.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Clyde A. Kinkle, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Corpsman with the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Vierzy, France, on 19 July 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Kinkle was conspicuous for incessant work until he fainted from exhaustion at the end of ten hours’ duty. This work was carried out in the open field and under heavy fire. Also in Champagne Sector October 8th, and 9th, he carried men off the field who were lying in places where it seemed no one could remain alive.
