The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Emil A. Keranen, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty. While serving on the U.S.S. OLYMPIA, Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Keranen was detailed for service with the British forces in northern Russia, from August, 1918, to February, 1919. He commanded a gun section and did good work under extremely trying weather conditions in advanced positions before defenses were made. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Keranen showed marked gallantry in action.
