The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Johannes F. Jensen, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Acting Master of the S.S. Finland, a United States Army Chartered Transport, on 28 October 1917. On this date the S.S. Finland was torpedoed the German submarine U-93, 150-miles off the French Coast. Commander Jensen was largely responsible for saving of that ship and, despite the damage, the Finland was returned safely to port.
