The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Haven F. Harris, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in Command of the Armed Guard on the S.S. Dora, at the time when the Dora was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine, 4 September 1918. Chief Boatswain’s Mate Harris is commended for his heroic conduct in handling the gun crew at the time and also for rescuing one of the men who had fallen from the rigging and fractured both legs.
