The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Samuel Hansen, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in Command of the Armed Guard of the steamship S.S. Westoil. Upon sighting two periscopes on 28 November 1918, the Armed Guard fired 23 rounds ammunition and prevented an attack upon the Westoil.
