The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Olaf J. Gullickson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in Command of the Armed Guard on the S.S. Norlina. For prompt action in an engagement at 6.30 p. m. on 4 June 1917, after the Norlina had been struck a glancing blow on the port side by an enemy torpedo, the crew opening fire on the submarine and hit the submarine twice when it disappeared.
