By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Hospital Apprentice First Class James Howell Grantham, United States Navy, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Hospital Apprentice First Class Grantham distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving sd s Corpsman attached to the 94th Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Argonne Forest, France, 1 November 1918. With unwavering courage and utter disregard of all personal danger this man dressed and atended wounded in the face of constant and terrific machine-gun and shell fire, until he himself was killed while in the act of bandaging a wounded comrade.
