The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Engineer First Class Michael J. Ginns, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism on the occasion of the collision of the U.S.S. SHAW with the H.M.S. AQUITANIA when the Shaw was cut in two and set on fire. Engineer First Class Ginns with others set a splendid example of efficiency, coolness, and indifference to danger, remaining at his post in the engine room, although water was knee deep and he had every reason to believe the ship was sinking.
