The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain William Gunnell DuBose, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession on duty as Construction Officer, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, and later in connection with the fitting out and repairing of vessels of the fleet during World War I. Further, for valuable service in equipping the vessels with mine-protective devices.
