The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Gunner Bernard Patrick Donnelly, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in Command of the Armed Guard of the S.S. Glynn. The Glynn was attacked by a submarine which opened fire at 4,500 yards. When the submarine approached within three hundred yards fire was opened and the submarine disappeared. It is believed that the prompt action of Chief Gunner Donnelly was responsible for the saving of the vessel.
