The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Quartermaster Third Class Howard A. Chase, United States Navy, for heroic conduct following the sinking of the U.S.S. JACOB JONES on 6 December 1917. Remaining on board to cut adrift splinter masts and life preservers, Quartermaster Third Class Chase was of special value during the trip of the motor dory.
