MERCURY and the U.S.S. COLUMBIA, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies to European ports through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines during World War I.

His enthusiasm, keen interest, and willingness to undertake any task assigned to him have been an inspiration to all who have come in contact with him. His persistence and success in completing those tasks has contributed markedly to the war effort.
