The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant William E. Benson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service while in Command of the U.S.S. PATAPCO, engaged in the important and hazardous work of sweeping for and removing the mines of the North Sea Mine Barrage during World War I.
