The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Wayne Barber, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at the front in France, 4 October 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Barber displayed marked bravery and devotion to duty in caring for the wounded under heavy shell and machine gun fire until he was severely wounded.

Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Barber distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action against the enemy in the Champagne Sector, France, during World War I.
