The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Chief Machinist’s Mate Niels (Niles) Anderson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in entering a compartment full of steam after two unsuccessful attempts. Chief Machinist’s Mate Anderson, acting on his own initiative, used excellent judgment, and displayed evidence of self-forgetfulness and indifference to danger.
