The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Eugene W. Wear (MCSN: 80910), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 49th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action on 6 June 1918, in the vicinity of Chateau-Thierry, France. With a private, Corporal Wear went into an open field under heavy shell and machine-gun fire and succeeded in bandaging and carrying back to our lines a wounded comrade.
