The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant William Noble Wallace (MCSN: 0-3527), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Etienne, France, 8 October 1918. First Lieutenant Wallace, with one comrade, while exposed frequently to direct hostile observation and heavy fire, accomplished an exceedingly hazardous reconnaissance of the front lines of his regiment.
