The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Dana Bristol Thrasher (MCSN: 86207), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Headquarters Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Vierzy, France, 19 July 1918. Private Thrasher carried numerous messages to front line platoons; crossing and re-crossing areas swept by severe machine-gun and artillery fire. When wounded, he refused medical attention, directing those who came to his assistance to leave him and go forward.
