The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Private John F. Smith (MCSN: 78642), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Machine-Gun Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. During a heavy enemy counter-barrage Private Smith was engaged as a runner. In the execution of his duty he displayed exceptional bravery, carrying messages through intense shell fire, falling severely wounded after his fourth journey.
