The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain Dwight Frank Smith (MCSN: 0-1217), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Company I, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, 8 June 1918. Captain Smith was conspicuous for his gallantry and energy in conducting attacks against superior forces in strongly fortified machine-gun positions. Under heavy machine-gun fire he fought until incapacitated by wounds.
