The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant Charles DeWayne Roberts (MCSN: 0-3221), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Company I, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, on June 6 and 8, 1918. First Lieutenant Roberts showed rare courage in repeatedly leading his platoon to an attack against an impregnable machine-gun position. Severely wounded and having lost the greater part of his men, he remained in action and persisted in requesting reinforcements with which to renew the attack.
