The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Lester Herbert Nutting (MCSN: 113433), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Ninety-Sixth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Thiaucourt, France, 15 September 1918. Private Nutting voluntarily advanced two hundred yards beyond the front lines to locate enemy machine-gun nests, signaling back their positions to the other members of his detachment, who immediately destroyed them. Private Nutting was killed in returning to our lines.
