The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Sergeant Major Carl Johannes Norstrand (MCSN: 81196), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the First Battalion, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. When his presence was not demanded in the performance of the normal duties of his office, Sergeant Major Norstrand volunteered to rescue wounded men from a field swept by machine-gun fire, and continued this heroic work with the aid of other volunteers until all had been recovered.
