The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Major Carl Johannes Norstrand (MCSN: 81196), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the First Battalion, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. When his presence was not demanded in the performance of the normal duties of his office, Sergeant Major Norstrand volunteered to rescue wounded men from a field swept by machine-gun fire, and continued this heroic work with the aid of other volunteers until all had been recovered.
