The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private Thomas A. O. Miller (MCSN: 108700), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 45th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Blanc Mont Ridge, France, 4 October 1918. Private Miller volunteered and carried a message through terrific shell and machine-gun fire. In the performance of this mission he suffered the loss of a leg from an exploding shell.
