The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Herman Lucien McLeod (MCSN: 90929), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Eighty-Third Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 6 – 8, 1918. Private McLeod, with Joseph A. Darges, Howard Childs and Benjamin Tilghman, Corporals, all of the same company, were prominent in the attack on enemy machine-gun positions in the Bois-de-Belleau. They were foremost in their company and at all times acquitted themselves with such distinction that they were an example for the remainder of their command.
