The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant Ralph William Marshall (MCSN: 0-97633), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, on June 6 and 8, 1918. Second Lieutenant Marshall demonstrated conspicuous bravery and coolness in fearlessly exposing himself to heavy fire from machine-guns, rifles, and hand grenades in order that he might procure accurate information regarding the movements of the enemy.
