The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant George Markley (MCSN: 81847), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Forty-Seventh Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Somme-Py, France, 4 October 1918. Sergeant Markley volunteered to ascertain the position of enemy machine guns enfilading his company. Under heavy shell and machine-gun fire he explored the enemy’s lines and secured valuable information. Later, when his company was ordered to attack, Sergeant Markley preceded the line as scout and was killed.
