The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant George Markley (MCSN: 81847), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Forty-Seventh Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Somme-Py, France, 4 October 1918. Sergeant Markley volunteered to ascertain the position of enemy machine guns enfilading his company. Under heavy shell and machine-gun fire he explored the enemy’s lines and secured valuable information. Later, when his company was ordered to attack, Sergeant Markley preceded the line as scout and was killed.

Sergeant Markley distinguished himself while serving with the 47th Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces at Blanc Mont, France, 1 to 10 October 1918.
