The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private Orr V. Lotspiech (MCSN: 90608), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 82d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Vierzy, France, 19 July 1918. While passing through an unusual barrage of artillery fire and machine-guns, Private Lotspiech had his leg broken by a bullet. Undaunted, he dragged himself to the post of command and reported to his company commander that his mission had been completed, thus saving the dispatch of another runner.
