The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Herschel Vance Lane (MCSN: 92086), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Seventh Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Vierzy, France, 20 July 1918. Private Lane volunteered and successfully carried messages from Vierzy to the front line near Tigny, through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, after two others who had been detailed for the duty had failed to get through.
