The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal George Dewey Hughes (MCSN: 83738), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fifty-First Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. Corporal Hughes conducted a patrol to the front, located machine-gun nests and gained contact with the enemy under very severe artillery and machine-gun fire, and set an example of calmness and courage under these hazardous conditions.
