The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Leon David Huffstater (MCSN: 99112), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Ninety-Seventh Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the engagement that resulted in the capture of Bouresches, France, on 6 June 1918. Private Huffstater volunteered to leave shelter to bring in wounded, and upon receiving permission to do so he carried injured comrades through artillery and machine-gun fire at great risk to his own life.
