The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to First Lieutenant Edward Buist Hope (MCSN: 0-1157), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. First Lieutenant Hope displayed coolness and courage in directing his platoon in the attack, during which he was badly wounded, but refused assistance until wounded men near him had been treated.
