The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Walter Scott Hiller (MCSN: 100561), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fifty-Fifth Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Bellefonte Farm, France, 10 November 1918. Under direct fire from seven enemy machine-guns, Corporal Hiller led a detachment across the River Meuse and destroyed a machine-gun nest which occupied a dominating position one thousand yards in advance of his company.
