The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private Michael J. Hardiman (MCSN: 68472), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 18th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. During the offensive operations at Blanc Mont Ridge, Private Hardiman volunteered and went into “No Man’s Land,” under intense machine-gun fire, and brought in a wounded man.
