The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Michael J. Hardiman (MCSN: 68472), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Eighteenth Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. During the offensive operations at Blanc Mont Ridge, Private Hardiman volunteered and went into “No Man’s Land,” under intense machine-gun fire, and brought in a wounded man.
