The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John Beck Flocken (MCSN: 95472), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Ninth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the capture of Bouresches, France, 6 June 1918. Private Flocken was twice hit in the leg, but he dragged his automatic rifle two hundred yards forward and opened fire on an enemy machine gun, and silenced it.
