The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal William J. Ferguson (MCSN: 169161), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventeenth Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Villemontry, France, on 10 November 1918. Corporal Ferguson and companion went out ahead of the line and silenced a machine-gun which threatened to hold up the advance of his company.
