The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain John H. Fay (MCSN: 0-281), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Eighth Machine-Gun Battalion, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, on 6 June 1918. Captain Fay displayed extraordinary heroism in the disposition of his machine guns under particularly difficult conditions. Opposed by superior forces, his utter indifference to personal danger furnished an example which inspired his men to success.
