The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant Neil Francis Dougherty (MCSN: 0-2266), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Bayonville, France, 2 November 1918. Displaying conspicuous leadership, Lieutenant Dougherty led his platoon against an enemy battery while it was in action. Through his skillful maneuvering forty-two prisoners, ten pieces of artillery and five machine-guns were captured.
