The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Robert Homer Donaghue (MCSN: 81644), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Eighty-Second Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois de Belleau, northwest of Chateau-Thierry, France, 4 November 1918. While his company was in support on the attacking company, communication was temporarily lost in the darkness. After all the runners had become casualties, Private Donaghue volunteered and succeeded in establishing liaison, pushing forward through the severe machine-gun and artillery fire despite the fact that he was painfully wounded soon after starting on his mission.
