By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class David T. DePue (MCSN: 74379/4604035), United States Marine Corps, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class DePue distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 76th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Champaigne, France, 3 October 1918, in saving the exposed right flank of his company at a critical time.

War Department, General Orders No. 71 (1919)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class David Travis DePue (MCSN: 74379), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Sixth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Georges, France, 1 November 1918. When his platoon was held up by barbed-wire entanglements within 30 yards of an enemy machine-gun nest, Private First Class DePue took an automatic rifle from a dead gunner near him and, firing as he advanced, charged through the wire. He fell twice, but reached the enemy position after his ammunition was exhausted, swinging his rifle above his head as a club upon the enemy defenders. When the platoon reached the enemy nest Private DePue was found lying mortally wounded among four enemy dead.
