The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class David T. DePue (MCSN: 74379), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 76th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Georges, France, 1 November 1918. When his platoon was held up by barbed-wire entanglements within 30 yards of an enemy machine-gun nest, Private First Class DePue took an automatic rifle from a dead gunner near him and, firing as he advanced, charged through the wire. He fell twice, but reached the enemy position after his ammunition was exhausted, swinging his rifle above his head as a club upon the enemy defenders. When the platoon reached the enemy nest Private DePue was found lying mortally wounded among four enemy dead.
