Dargis (MCSN: 90034), United States Marine Corps, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Dargis distinguished himself while serving with the 83d Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June – 10 July 1918.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph A. Dargis (MCSN: 90034), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Eighty-Third Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 6 – 8, 1918. Corporal Dargis, with Corporals Howard J. Childs and Benjamin Tilghman, and Private Herman L. McLeod, all of the same company, were prominent in the attack on enemy machine-gun positions in the Bois-de-Belleau on June 6 and 8, 1918; were foremost in their company and at all times acquitted themselves with such distinction that they were an example for the remainder of their command.
